Super Green Smoothie

Green Smoothies

Green smoothies are all the rage right now, and for good reason! My green smoothie contains an ideal balance of veggies, fiber, protein + healthy fats, all which work to keep you satisfied for hours. It’s my go-to breakfast, but also makes a great meal replacement.

Super Green Smoothie Ingredients

To make my life easier, I like to have some of my ingredients prepped ahead of time to make the morning smoothie making process quick + efficient. At the beginning of each week I take a bundle of bananas, peel them, chop them in half and place them in a Tupperware container in the freezer. This way the bananas won’t brown or go bad. I also purchase the pre-washed package of organic baby spinach so it’s easy to just grab a couple of handfuls and throw it in the blender. Frozen berries are a must for me as well because they keep well in the freezer, they’re pre-washed, and unlike fresh berries, they won’t mold or rot.

Without the addition of protein powder, this smoothie contains about 5 grams of protein. Protein is essential to keep you full and give you energy to get through your day. In fact, I suggest starting your day with 15-20 grams of protein. Enter: protein powder. The problem with so many protein powders on the market these days is that they are full of artificial ingredients! No thank you. Instead, choose a high-quality protein powder. Some of my favorites are: Garden of Life Raw Protein, Sunwarrior Protein, PlantFusion Protein or Nutiva Hemp Protein.

Servings: 1

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 handfuls organic baby spinach
  • ½ cup frozen berries [blueberries are my fave]
  • ½ frozen, pre-peeled banana
  • 1 Tbsp sunflower seed or almond butter [or 1/4 ripe avocado – this adds extra creaminess]
  • 1 serving high quality protein powder, optional [serving size will be labeled on product]
  • 1 -2 cups filtered water [sometimes I will use coconut or almond milk if I have some on hand]

DIRECTIONS

Place all ingredients in blender [I add the ingredients in list order from above]. Blend and enjoy. You can add ice or increase/decrease amount of liquid used to reach desired consistency.

SMOOTHIE EXTRAS:

To enhance the nutrient content or just change the flavor, I like to add some extras in my green smoothie. Feel free to experiment with these or add in any other extras you enjoy. My favorites include:

  • 1 Tbsp chia seeds or ground flax seeds
  • 1 Tbsp cacao nibs
  • 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pitted date [for added sweetness]

I appreciate your tips like peeling, halving and freezing the bananas so they’re ready to go.
